Dedicated to those who would never come to see the other side of the COVID-19 pandemic, Debbie Chou’s ‘There Goes’ is a heart-wrenching new track that neatly summarises both the struggle and the perseverance that the global situation has been met with.
The track details the sacrifices that have been made and the way that the world has had to adapt and improvise in order to just stay alive, and sadly those that weren’t so lucky. Debbie Chou manages to convey a lot of the emotions and thoughts of the people who have lived through this. The stripped back nature of the track brings an earnest, candid honesty to it that makes you feel almost you are sat alongside the artist yourself looking over the past. ‘There Goes’ is an immaculate snapshot of a moment in time, articulated with a deftness and accuracy that feels often unnerving.
“We need to be reminded that we cannot just sit there with closed eyes and wait for this thing to be over in silence. We need to face reality. Debbie Chou does exactly that, she shows us the reality with this vulnerable tune.
It’s super important to not forget those who were lost, and those who are fighting with their lives at stake to ensure our safety. Sitting safely at our homes, there are people out there who risk their health and their well-being to help others. To ensure that this pandemic won’t last forever. As the song progresses, Chou even brings a positive, distinct and decisive emotion into her voice, making this song not only an emotional tune, but also sort of a pep talk. The mix of beaten down melancholy and this fierce fighter-vibe brings tears to my eyes to be honest.
‘There Goes’ is a reflection of mankind as far as I’m concerned. It’s important to remember who we lost. It’s important to recognize who is out there fighting. And it’s important to think about ourselves, realizing what we have lost so far, but also that the days are going to be brighter soon.”
“Taken off the newly released EP ‘The End of Our Time’, this track contains a really intense amount of melancholy. Backed by a melodic and quite defensive piano and defensive additional instruments, the stage is all set for those emotional vocals of Chou…
‘December’ is a poignant and relentless piece of art from pianist and singer-songwriter Debbie Chou. Throughout its six minute duration the track rouses and builds dramatically, as Debbie effortlessly tears through a narrative of a relentless and unattainable woman. The track almost feels as much like an acting performance as it does a song, with Debbie thoroughly in character throughout, as believable and fierce as one would expect, and matched entirely by her mesmerising and impactful piano playing.
Debbie Chou is a wonderful singer-songwriter in the New York area that is both a solo artist and is also the featured keyboard player in The Barrens.
“December was inspired by the TV show Mad Men, with the narrative following a Don Draper style affair. The tiptoing piano line really helps to further this narrative, and there’s an eerie, mystical feel to things. It’s a great track…
